The casting is great and the performances of actors and actress are perfect. This drama is not only referred to the Chinese novel but also put the romantic and fantasy scenes. It reminds me to Goblin and Black Knight. This is the first drama after Lee Seung-Gi was discharged from the military. His performance is still amazing. When Son O-Gong and Ma-Wang are in the same scenes, is funny. Both of them met in the drama of "You're all surrounded" I think Lee Seung-gi is really match with the character of Son O-Gong.
Oh Yeon-Seo, I like her since the drama of Please Come Back Mister and Shine or Go Crazy. She has good chemistry with Lee Seung-Gi.
Lee Se-young as Jung Se-ra / Jin Bu-ja / Ah Sa-nyeo has an interesting characteristic. The first scene I saw her as zombie, looks mysterious and horror. Next, she becomes Jin Bu-ja who has innocent and bright characteristic. Later, she becomes Ah Sa-nyeo who has power and cruel. She must shows the different characters and can do it well.
The story is interesting from the beginning but there are several parts which are uncleared. For example, what is the main purpose for Octopus Prince as he barely has a role. How about the dragon? Many questions for me for episode 19. The middle of the drama is getting boring. There are many romantic scenes between the lead role. Many people complain about the ending. The ending is similar to Goblin and Kangchi drama but for Hwayugi is not completely like that. If you don't have background about "Journey to the West", the beginning of episode 20 will provide the clear explanation. Overall, the story is ok but still lack of something. Some scenes should provide more detail otherwise the story seems to be uncleared.
